Monday Museum

27th November 2024

by Khemminga Teerapong

Monday Museum Project - Artist House Bangkok

Duration: 2025 – on-going

The Monday Museum project, an innovative initiative funded by the National Discovery Museum Institute (Thailand) and the British Council, represents a groundbreaking effort to transform community spaces into vibrant hubs of learning and interaction for the elderly. Launched in 2025 as a pilot project for the Khong Bang Luang Community, this ongoing initiative aims to redefine how we engage with and celebrate the lives of older adults.

At its core, Monday Museum leverages the rich life experiences and creativity of elderly residents. Every Monday, a designated community space in Khlong Bang Luang is transformed into a dynamic gallery where rotating exhibitions showcase photos, collectibles, and artworks contributed by the elderly. However, this initiative is about more than just displaying objects; it is about storytelling, sharing, and fostering intergenerational connections.

The project focuses on empowering elderly participants by equipping them with co-curating and art management skills. Through hands-on workshops and collaboration with experts, participants gain practical experience in organizing and managing exhibitions and community-level art activities. This not only nurtures their creativity but also enhances their sense of purpose and inclusion within the community.

By involving older adults in curatorial processes, the Monday Museum creates a space that celebrates their unique perspectives while simultaneously enriching the community’s cultural fabric. The initiative benefits people of all ages by fostering dialogue and collaboration, turning Mondays into a day of shared learning and inspiration.

Serving as a model for other communities, the Monday Museum pilot project in Khlong Bang Luang highlights the potential for art and storytelling to bridge generations, empower the elderly, and strengthen community bonds.
