Creative Ageing in Thailand Project

Duration: Nov 2020 – Dec 2021

Funded by: British Council Thailand

Type of Research: International Research Grant

Principle investigator: Khemminga Teerapong

In a rapidly ageing society like Thailand, fostering well-being among senior citizens is more critical than ever. The research project Creative Ageing in Thailand addresses this need by delving into the role of creative activities in enhancing the quality of life for Thai seniors. Conducted over a twelve-month period from January to December 2021, the study provides valuable insights into the emerging field of creative ageing.

The research examines the landscape of creative ageing within the Thai cultural context, highlighting the positive impacts of creative activities on the physical, emotional, and social well-being of older adults. From art workshops to community-based performances, the study identifies how such engagements can empower seniors, reduce isolation, and promote active lifestyles. Moreover, the findings include best practices from Thailand, showcasing exemplary programs and initiatives that effectively integrate creativity into the lives of older adults. These examples serve as a guide for implementing successful creative ageing strategies both within and beyond the country.

The study also explores the opportunities and challenges inherent in implementing creative ageing practices, shedding light on how Thailand’s unique cultural heritage can shape and sustain these initiatives. By addressing barriers such as resource allocation, accessibility, and cultural sensitivity, the research offers a pathway for expanding creative ageing efforts across diverse communities.

Findings from the project not only deepen the understanding of how creativity benefits the ageing population but also provide a foundation for future developments in this field. As Thailand continues to grapple with the realities of an ageing society, Creative Ageing in Thailand offers an inspiring vision of how cultural and artistic activities, combined with proven best practices, can transform the lives of older adults, fostering resilience, joy, and connection.
